Cool off With a Swim

Asheville’s natural mountain setting offers plenty of spots to take a dip and escape the warm weather, but you might have to put on your hiking boots to find some of the best swimming holes. If you’d like to hit one of the most popular spots, plan a trip to Sliding Rock in the Pisgah Ranger District. Here you can slide down a 60-foot rock, landing in a pool at the bottom. If you’d prefer something less frequented, try Elk Creek Falls or Upper Creek Falls, also in Pisgah National Forest. There are also a number of lakes in the area, including Wildcat Lake and Lake James State Park.

Hit the Water

If you’d rather combine a bit of adventure with getting wet, head to one of the area’s many rivers. For an adrenaline rush, ride the rapids at Ocoee River or Chattooga River.  If you prefer more tranquil waters, take the whole family and go on a calm water float down the French Broad River. You’ll also find ample kayaking, canoeing, fishing and even zip-lining opportunities in the area.
