About an hour’s drive from Savannah, just across Port Royal Sound is the largest barrier island of South Carolina and some of the most beautiful beaches in America with its sugar-white, hard-packed sand and tall sand-dune grass. Even though the island has more private beaches than many other coastal areas, there are plenty of great public beaches perfect for a day trip.

Coligny Beach

Considered one of the best beaches on Hilton Head and certainly, one of the most popular, Coligny Beach offers free parking and lots of amenities. It’s a great spot to rent a bike or Hobie Cat, play volleyball, swim or just enjoy a drink under the sun at the Tiki Hut outdoor bar.

Driessen Beach Park

With boardwalk access and a decent amount of parking, it’s a great spot for an afternoon getaway. The area offers a picnic table pavilion, grill and playground as well as access to bathrooms and outdoor showers.

Folly Field Beach Park

Because of its calm, shallow waters, it’s the perfect place for wading and boogie boarding, and its wide, hard-packed beaches allow for a relaxing bike ride down its shores. Beachgoers can access the beach from a wooden boardwalk and beach-matted paths.
