Give Dad the Gift of Travel This Father’s Day

Why not skip the tie or cologne this year in favor of giving Dad the gift of family memories? Plan a trip for just the two of you, or get the whole family on board and set out on a fabulous adventure. Here are some destination ideas that’ll help you celebrate Dad and his unique interests.

The Nature Lover

Jacksonville, Florida, is home to more than 80,000 acres of greenspace that’s perfect for kayaking, hiking, biking, and more. If the dad in your life is an outdoor adventurer, this Florida destination is a must-visit.

Jacksonville has a wide range of natural attractions, including wildlife sanctuaries, preserves, nature centers, and state parks. Big Talbot Island State Park is a popular stop for nature lovers. The park’s Blackrock Beach features a coastline dotted with black “rocks” (which are actually compressed peat and sand shaped by waves). Explore walking trails, bike trails, and beach trails, or head out kayaking for a different view of the shore.

The History Buff

For the dad who enjoys all things historic, consider a trip to the second-oldest city in the Western Hemisphere: San Juan, Puerto Rico. San Juan’s cobblestone streets are rich with history dating back to the 16th century as the second-oldest European settlement in the Western Hemisphere. And Americans can visit without a passport.

Old San Juan is a place to find historic sites and classic Spanish Colonial architecture. The Cathedral of San Juan Bautista is a great example; this church dates back to 1540 and used to hold the remains of explorer Juan Ponce de Leon. No trip to San Juan is complete without a visit to the San Juan National Historic Site, which includes forts, massive sandstone walls and San Juan de la Cruz, a defensive fort surrounding colonial portions of San Juan.

The Gambler

Vegas is the ultimate destination for gamblers, but it’s also home to much more than casinos. From celebrity-favored golf courses to world-renowned restaurants and bars, Vegas is the ultimate Father’s Day-bash destination for the two of you. Check out the iconic casinos like the Bellagio, Mandalay Bay, the Venetian-Palazzo, and Caesar’s Palace. These flashy wonderlands are like small cities with their own restaurants, shows, and even museums.

If the dad in your life seeks some time in the sun, he can venture outdoors for a game of golf on one of Vegas’ famous courses like Shadow Creek, ranked No. 17 by Golf Magazine, or the Jack Nicklaus-designed Coyote Springs.

The Music Lover

Where else would you take the music-loving dad in your life than the “Live Music Capital of the World,” – Austin, Texas? This destination has its roots in live music dating back to the 1960s and 70s when Willie Nelson used to play at the famous Armadillo World Headquarters. The 1970s and 80s brought even more famous acts and music venues. Since the 1990s, Austin has more live music venues per capita than anywhere else in the nation.
