Give the Gift of Sunshine This Holiday Season

Finding the perfect holiday gift is sometimes a challenge. You want something useful, thoughtful and memorable that also fits your budget. Fortunately, there are great deals on travel to popular destinations around the country — so skip the socks and trendy trinkets this year. Instead, surprise your loved ones with a vacation to one of these warm weather destinations, and give them the gift of sunshine in the middle of the cold, wet winter.

Palm Springs

Palm Springs started as a health resort in the early 1900s, and went on to become a retreat for Hollywood stars wanting to get away from the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles. It’s still a hot spot — especially in the winter, when visitors flock to the warm weather and sunny skies in Coachella Valley. This desert oasis is also home to the country’s largest collection of mid-century modern architecture, and the largest rotating tram car in the country. It’s conveniently located near Joshua Tree National Park and Mount San Jacinto State Park.

With daily high temperatures in the 70s, and sunny, dry days, Phoenix is a warm-weather wonderland in the winter. It’s location in the middle of Arizona makes it a great spot for exploring some of the state’s top attractions, including the Grand Canyon, Camelback Mountain and Coronado National Forest. Spend a day learning more about the animals at the Phoenix Zoo, or set up a tee time at one of the area’s top-rated golf courses.

Instead of spending the winter cooped up inside to avoid the chilly wind and snow, take the family to southwest Florida. With average daily temperatures in the upper 70s, you’ll have plenty of sunshine and warmth to encourage outdoor activities. Soak up some sun and build sandy snowmen on the gulf beaches between Naples and Sarasota. Get up close to the wildlife on an airboat ride through the Everglades, or from a kayak in the Caloosahatchee River where manatees ride out the winter in the warm river water.

Home to Walt Disney World, Universal Studios and Sea World, Orlando is the theme park capital of the world. It’s also known as The City Beautiful, a name it lives up to in the winter, when the skies are clear and temperatures peak in the 70s. With their thrill rides, familiar characters and entertaining shows, the attractions are the perfect cure for the winter blues. When you’re ready for a break from all the excitement, head over to Cocoa or Daytona Beach for some relaxation, or explore Kennedy Space Center on the coast.
