Discover some of the best places to take a dip or kayak down a river in North Carolina. Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Asheville has it all.

The area’s stunning natural beauty provides many opportunities for outdoor fun and adventure for the whole family. Experience an unforgettable vacation in one of America’s most beautiful destinations.

Go for a Wild Swim

Asheville’s mountain setting offers plenty of spots to take a dip and escape the warm weather. But you’ll need your hiking boots to find the best swimming holes.

Waterfall in Pisgah National Forest in Asheville, NC

One of the most popular spots is Sliding Rock in the Pisgah Ranger District. Here you can slide down a 60-foot rock to a natural pool at the bottom.

If you prefer somewhere less frequented, try Elk Creek Falls or Upper Creek Falls, also in the Pisgah National Forest. There are also various lakes to explore in the area, including Wildcat Lake and Lake James State Park.

Do a Floating Bar Crawl

Float down the French Broad River in Asheville and visit local bars and breweries along its banks. You’ll start with Wedge Brewing Co., and end with New Belgium Brewery.

We recommend bringing a cooler of ice with you to keep the party going once you’re back on the water. Feel free to bring your own beverages!

Park at Hominy Creek River Park and get a ride back to your vehicle once you finish the float. For tickets, go to Cedar Rock Adventures.

Kayak Through the Biltmore Estate

Enjoy a peaceful, self-guided kayak tour through the world-famous Biltmore Estate.

You’ll paddle past the stables, Antler Hill Village, winery, Inn, and the grand house itself.

If you decide to go on a weekend, you can grab a post-kayak snack from local food trucks at French Broad Outfitters. They take care of the equipment and shuttle so you don’t have to.

Learn to Fly Fish

Sign up for a guided fishing trip with a fly-fishing professional. You’ll learn how to wear waders, the best casting techniques, and some fish psychology.

Regardless of your angler experience, you’ll have a memorable time. You can choose to fish for smallmouth bass, musky, or trout in Northwest Carolina or East Tennessee.

If fishing is your thing, this is the tour for you!

Experience Float Yoga

If you’ve come to Asheville for a relaxing vacation, consider doing a float yoga class on the French Broad River.

Find your Zen on one of the oldest rivers in the world. Feel the magic flow down the ancient river as it comes out of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The best part is there’s no experience necessary! Come as you are, and equipment and guidance will be given to you. Whether you’re a visitor or a resident, there’s an option that will suit your needs.
