History of Allegiant Stadium
The origin story of Allegiant Stadium consists of relocation and innovation, with a touch of Vegas flair.
It all began when the Raiders bid farewell to their long-time home in Oakland, California, for new horizons in Las Vegas, Nevada. The move was met with excitement from fans eager to embrace their team in a fresh setting.
Allegiant Stadium was completed in 2020 and hosted its first game on September 21, 2020, when the Las Vegas Raiders beat New Orleans 34-24.
But the heart of Allegiant Stadium is undoubtedly the Al Davis Memorial Torch, a striking homage to the legendary Raiders owner Al Davis. The eternal flame inside this 92-foot-tall torch was chosen in honor of his quote that read, “The fire that burns the brightest in the Raiders organization is the will to win.”
Now, the team and fans pay tribute to Al Davis by lighting the torch in his honor before every game. His widow, Carol Davis, had the honor of lighting the torch for the first time in Allegiant Stadium.
But how did this architectural marvel come to fruition? The idea was born, in part, from the city’s determination to secure a professional football team and the commitment of the Raiders organization. The journey to bring Allegiant Stadium to life was an ambitious undertaking, yet the stadium was completed on time, a remarkable achievement given its size and complexity. The result? A magnificent, state-of-the-art venue that stands proudly in the heart of Las Vegas.
And the story is far from over. Allegiant Stadium is set to make history once again as it prepares to host Super Bowl LVIII, marking a new chapter in the stadium’s legacy.
How is Allegiant Stadium Sustainable?
In the world of sports and entertainment, Allegiant Stadium shines as a beacon of sustainability. It’s a testament to environmentally conscious practices from its inception to everyday operations.
BUILDING WITH GREEN IN MIND
The stadium’s design prioritized energy efficiency, with features like LED lighting and efficient heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. These innovations are designed to minimize energy consumption, allowing the stadium to run on 100% renewable energy.
WASTE
Waste management and diversion is a crucial aspect of sustainability here.
Allegiant Stadium diverts waste away from the landfill and currently repurposes, reuses, or donates it into 20 material streams. A dedicated team sorts the trash to ensure all recyclable materials have been collected and sent to the right place.
As a LEEDS certified Green Building, we’re approaching 90% of waste being diverted, paving the way for a zero-waste future.
FOOD SCRAPS
With so many people visiting the stadium for each event, there is a lot of food left over – 11,000 lbs. to be exact!
As part of our waste diversion efforts, we partner with Combs Brothers. This local business sends the stadium’s food scraps to Las Vegas Livestock, which processes the scraps into livestock food. In addition to games and concerts, Allegiant Stadium provides waste diversion services at no cost for all private events.
ENERGY EFFICIENCY
Allegiant Stadium is devoted to energy optimalization. It features a state-of-the-art chiller plant, high efficiency air handling units, energy optimizing lighting, and an energy efficient lighting control system. LEDs throughout the stadium also lessen the electrical burden.
Renewable energy sources account for 29% of the total energy used at the Stadium, including solar, geothermal, hydroelectric, and wind. This percentage exceeds Nevada’s Renewable Energy Source Mandate.
The stadium’s engineering team is consistently finding ways to improve energy efficiency through diligent monitoring of electrical loads and review of energy usage.
From its construction to everyday operations, the stadium goes above and beyond to minimize its environmental footprint.
WATER
Located in one of the most water-constrained cities in the nation, sustainable water management is a top priority for the Las Vegas Raiders, and we have implemented several tactics to enhance water conservation practices in our facilities.
Allegiant Stadium selected water-efficient plumbing fixtures, in partnership with Zurn Elkay Water to reduce water use across 297 restroom locations, saving an estimated 535 million gallons of water annually.
