The Pappajohn Sculpture Park creates a pedestrian-friendly entrance to downtown Des Moines. The 4.4-acre urban park has over 30 sculptures from world-renown artists and is a place the whole family can enjoy. You’ll find an oasis in the middle of downtown at the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden. This lush green space spans 12 acres and contains an iconic geodesic-domed conservatory that contains a tropical forest. Outside are walking paths, a rose garden, an orchid collection, and much more.
Adventureland is a staple Iowa theme park that is fun for the whole family. You can spend an entire day exploring the 100+ rides and attractions. When you’ve had your fill of heart-pounding thrill rides, take a stroll down the Main Street, and check out all the shops. You can even stay on-site at either the Adventureland Campground or the Adventureland Inn. The smaller footprint of the Blank Park Zoo makes it the perfect kid-friendly Des Moines adventure. Here you can feed the giraffes, ride the train, and visit the petting zoo.
Iowa is home to over 800 miles of scenic trails, many of which are paved and easily accessible. Walk or run the beautiful Clive Greenbelt Trail to hit the trailside bars and restaurants. Don’t miss the High Trestle Trail which includes one of the highest trail bridges in the world, the High Trestle Trail Bridge. Take the Meredith Trail from downtown Des Moines to the scenic Gray’s Lake Park for a 5-mile trek or bike ride.
